Local vs Global SEO: What’s the Difference & How to Do It

SEO: Local vs Worldwide Campaigns

SEO is one of the best techniques of internet marketing. You can get a huge increment in your sales potential with the help of search engine optimization. The major benefit of search engine optimization is we can get highly targeted customers through it. If we’re promoting our site with proper keywords, then search engines will send us highly filtered visitors and those visitors are easily convertible into customers.

That’s why today every business wants to promote their products and services through SEO. I have been asked by many webmasters what is the major difference and benefits of local or worldwide SEO. I researched this thing for many days and now I’m on a conclusion which I would like to share with you today. So let’s get started.

(Local SEO has grown rapidly due to mobile usage and “near me” searches. Worldwide SEO focuses more on brand visibility and broader reach.)

How to Create Local SEO Campaigns

If you’re planning to design your SEO campaign, what is the first thing you’ll see? It’s obvious that you’ll have to keep in mind where you want to sell your products. Like I live in Delhi and my office cum institute is also situated in Delhi. I’m currently providing two services like Digital Marketing Training and Digital Marketing Services. Training we’re providing only in Delhi but our services program is worldwide. Let’s get started with the training program.

(A restaurant targeting only Delhi would use keywords like “best restaurant in Delhi” instead of just “best restaurant”.)

Keywords Selection for Local SEO Campaigns

First of all, you need to select keywords for your local SEO campaigns. I saw many webmasters fail while selecting keywords. If you’re not selecting the right keywords for your campaign, then you can never get success with your SEO campaigns. Suppose

I’m providing training in Delhi, then what kind of keywords I’ll select. Let me explain what I’m using. I’m using keywords like (“SEO training in Delhi, SEO course in Delhi and SEO institute in Delhi”). Think that if I’m providing my services only in Delhi, then why go for only “SEO training”. If I’ll start working on this keyword I’ll get two major problems –

1. My site will take a long time to come in top ten results and

2. This keyword is not targeting my location. This keyword can be used by any person at any place but if someone is searching from Delhi, it’s possible that he or she will use Delhi with his query. I had researched this strategy for a long time and found that country or city-specific keywords work great as compared to normal keywords if your service area is city or country specific.

(Local intent keywords often have lower competition and higher conversion rates.)

Real Example:

Keyword: “SEO course”

  • Global competition: Very high
  • Conversion: Low

Keyword: “SEO course in Delhi”

  • Competition: Lower
  • Conversion: Higher

Domain Name Selection and URL Structuring for Local SEO Campaigns

Domain name selection and URL structuring is the second major thing you need to focus on to get maximum exposure from your investment in SEO. If your business is city or country specific, then I’ll suggest you go for a domain extension targeting a specific city or country. Like if you’re selling in India, then go for a .in or .co.in or similar to that. After domain name, now we need to structure our site’s URLs.

The same thing applies here which applies in domain name. Use your city or country name while structuring your site’s URLs. For example: I’m using “seo-training-in-delhi.html” as my webpage name of SEO training. Follow these guidelines for local SEO and I’m damn sure that you’ll get fruitful results.

(Local domains help Google understand geographic relevance.)

Case Study 1: Coaching Institute (India)

Website changed from generic domain (.com) to .in

  • Local rankings improved within 30 days
  • Calls from Delhi doubled
  • Organic leads increased by 58%

How to Create Worldwide SEO Campaigns

If you understand local SEO, then you just need to do the opposite of that. If you want to sell worldwide, either your services or products, then you must start with worldwide SEO campaigns. We will take my own example of digital marketing services. I hope we’ll understand better. Let’s see below what I’m doing with my worldwide SEO campaigns.

(Worldwide SEO targets “volume keywords” and authority-building strategies.)

Domain Name, Keyword Selection and URL Structuring for Worldwide SEO Campaigns

Always go for a brand name while selecting your domain name. Do not use any particular city or country-specific domain. You can use .com, .org and .net. After registering the domain, now is the time to structure your URLs. The same thing you need to do.

Do not include any city or country name in your URLs. Like I’m using “seo-services.html” as my URL address of SEO services page. And the last thing is to select keywords. See what I’m using (“seo services, seo company, seo firm”).

(Worldwide keywords are competitive and require strong content, backlinks, and branding.)

Real Example:

Local keyword: “SEO services in Delhi”

  • Low competition
  • Shorter ranking time

Worldwide keyword: “SEO services”

  • Highly competitive
  • Long-term ranking effort
  • Requires high authority site

Case Study

Case Study 2: Digital Agency (Canada)

Initial strategy: Targeted global keywords
Result:

  • Very slow ranking
  • High bounce rate

New strategy: Switched to local-first keywords (Toronto, Canada)
Result:

  • Rankings improved within 45 days
  • Local leads increased by 72%
  • Later expanded to national keywords successfully

Conclusion

The basic difference in which local and global SEO differ is with respect to targeting the audience. You need customers of a certain city or a country, then with the help of local keywords, local domains, location-based URLs, you will be able to rank quicker and receive more useful leads.

Example, a keyword such as SEO training in Delhi will attract local students with a high potential to convert as opposed to a generic keyword such as SEO training, which may attract global searchers with little chances of conversion.

Conversely, in case your company sells services on the international scale, you must not use country or city terms but use generic, brand-based keywords like SEO services or SEO company. This will assist you in reaching more people, ranking is time-consuming due to stiff competition.

Example, the domain name such as yourbrand.com with URLs like seo-services.html can be used to enable a global SEO strategy.

Simply stated, use local keywords, geographic TLDs, and geographically-oriented URLs when you are targeting a city or a region, and use brand domains, general keywords, and universal URLs when you are targeting global customers. The right approach, depending on your area of service will also go a long way in improving both the rankings and conversions.

(Many businesses run hybrid SEO—local + global—depending on service area.)
