On-Page SEO Optimization Guide for Beginners: Practical Home Page Tips

Hello one and all, good to be back and provide more info that can hopefully help you all out! This is the next series of blog posts that this kind blog owner has agreed to host for me. Now, I don’t want to get into anything advanced right away, so I want to provide info that those of you who are still passing the beginner stage can use as well!

On-site optimization is one of the only SEO techniques where you can almost directly measure results based on your actions. You have complete control over how you edit or change anything on your site. With link building, links come and go, and generally speaking you cannot control the amount of links coming into your site. Changes on your own site should be considered just as important as those on other people’s sites.

Additionally: Because on-site SEO is fully within your control, it is often the best starting point for beginners who want predictable and measurable improvements.

Let’s give you some ideas on how you could optimize your home page, shall we?

All examples need to be based around one area to make it easier, so let’s use an Egypt holidays tour operator. We are going to call it – Fly High.

Title Tag Optimization for SEO

Most importantly, to kick off and probably the easiest way to work through your site is to start from the top and work down to the bottom!

Don’t have a massive title tag!

Example: Bad Title Tag:

Egypt holidays, Holidays to Egypt, Egypt Holidays, Hotels and Flights to Egypt

Why is it bad? First of all, it is an extremely long title tag, breaching the 70-character limit. It is important to remember that spaces are also “blank” characters, so they take up space. It is also quite spammy. You can quite clearly see the repetition—“Egypt Holidays” is an obvious target—and the title serves only a “list-like purpose.” Try to create something that is beneficial for both SEO purposes and user aspects.

Example: Good Title Tag:

Egypt holidays: Great Deals on Holidays to Egypt | Travel Fly High

Firstly, this is a shorter title tag and one that displays correctly in Google. The “Great Deals” aspect is a user pull or hook, but it also has some influence on SEO. Offering deals on holidays to Egypt could also pull in long-tail keywords. This title tag also incorporates the tour operator at the end, which gives your brand name more advertising across the web. As people remember what they see in your title or skim it, they are likely to use it as a search term in the future. Also notice that the Egypt holidays term isn’t spammed and is only used twice, not in repetition.

Website Menu and Navigation Structure

Yes, another important aspect of your website. Some of you call it your navigation bar, and some your on-site menu. In any case, it serves the same purpose. This is your road map for your customers, and although this is important, it is also so much more!

Your menu is also the way that search engines crawl your website. This is the most important way of structuring your site so that it is easy to find all of your pages. Make sure that your pages are listed well and that the anchor text is correctly associated with each page. So for an Egypt spa holidays page, make sure the link is labeled “Egypt Spa Holidays.” This may sound simple, but it is very important.

As I have said in a previous post, it is important not to overdo the number of links on your home page. Spreading the power from your home page is important, but you need to make sure there isn’t too much power being distributed away from this main page. Make sure that your menu stays consistent throughout your site, and if you have other pages that you want to link to from deeper pages, just create a sub-menu for that page. This way, you assign a level of “importance” to pages throughout your site.

Instructions: Review your navigation menu and ensure each link uses clear, keyword-relevant anchor text without overcrowding the home page.

On-Site Content and Keyword Usage

Remember, the single most important factor on your site is the content! Don’t argue with me—yes, it is! The text and images that you have on your page identify what your site’s purpose is and what you have to offer the world. Without any content, or just a load of jumbled-up words, you won’t ever rank for anything. Here are some very key and important things to remember when creating content for your site:

Remember that your website can house a multitude of different pages. Don’t use your home page as the hub for every single one of your key terms. Only use it for one, two, or maybe three big terms that provide your site with the bulk of traffic. Too many terms targeted on one page will be difficult to control, and spreading the power between them will reduce focus.

Ever heard of keyword density? Also very important, and although a lot of people know what it is, they usually don’t know what to do about it. Here is a quick question for you:

How many times do you think you should repeat a keyword you are targeting in your home page content? In percent:

10%
5%
20%
2%

I asked a whole bunch of people this question, and the most common answers I got were A and B. Thankfully, not that many people answered C, but don’t worry if you did—I will explain the problems here!

In essence, it all depends on how much text you have on your site, and this comes down to how many times you repeat your key phrase. However, here are two block examples, one with the key phrase “Egypt Holidays” repeated 10% of the time and one at 2% (you tell me which one you think is right):

Egypt holidays can be an enjoyable experience for your family! Egypt holidays offer both couples and families a wonderful experience, and with Egypt holidays becoming more and more popular each year, it can be difficult to find the right Egypt holidays that suit you. Try traveling with Fly High on our very own Egypt holidays as we try to provide you with the most fantastical Egypt holidays around!

Egypt holidays can provide a wonderful experience for all the family! We at Travel High try to supply you with what your needs are and give you the best holiday experience that any tour operator can offer. Our Egypt holiday deals are some of the lowest in the market, but we don’t trade cheaper holidays for lower-quality accommodation. At Travel High, our Egypt holidays keep prices down while still giving you the experience of a lifetime in some of the most luxurious hotels in the country!

As you can see, even a 10% repetition of keywords in the content can look absurd, especially when you consider that it means mentioning the keyword roughly every 10 words.

Footer Optimization for SEO

Your footer should realistically replicate the most important links from your navigation bar but also include other links required for site map purposes. For instance, you may have a “Privacy” page or “Terms and Conditions” page that you may not want displayed on your main menu but still need somewhere on your site. This is where your footer comes in handy. Of course, in the footer you can also include your site map, which I will go into more detail about in a later post.

Case Study: Beginner On-Page SEO Results

A small travel website optimized its home page title tag, reduced keyword stuffing in content, and cleaned up navigation links. Within six weeks, the site saw improved rankings for its main holiday keyword and a noticeable increase in organic inquiries without any new backlinks.

I realize that this may not be as advanced as some may hope, but it is a more in-depth look into how you run and build your website. You can also join our SEO course for more.

Conclusion

On-page SEO is one of the most controllable and measurable aspects of search optimization. By improving title tags, navigation, content quality, and keyword usage, beginners can build a strong SEO foundation that supports long-term growth.
