Let\u2019s assume you\u2019re connecting with your mom or best friend on LinkedIn. Obviously you don\u2019t need to change the default message LinkedIn spits out for someone who has no reason to reject your connection request.<\/p>\n
On the flip side, that guy you met at a conference last week?<\/p>\n
He probably met 30 other people that same day and may benefit from a quick memory jog by personalizing your connection request. It doesn\u2019t have to be incredibly detailed, just give him something!<\/p>\n
Something not like this, I mean. This type of connection request is unlikely to get you more than 0 connections:<\/p>\n
(2)\u00a0You Join a LinkedIn Group Just to Spam Your Links<\/h2>\n
LinkedIn groups are one of the most under-utilized but most important features of LinkedIn.<\/p>\n
I try to join at least one group for every professional interest I have. For example, I\u2019m a member of blogging groups, email marketing groups, social media groups, Chicago-based groups (where I live), school and job alumni groups\u2026 you get the idea.<\/p>\n
You can join up to 50 \u2014 so make the most of them!<\/strong> But don\u2019t just join them to see what\u2019s in it for you. I promise, being an active group member will result in great benefits.<\/p>\n But you can\u2019t always just spam links to your own website or Upwork profile.<\/p>\n Contribute knowledge whenever it makes sense. The more active you are, the better your chance of being a top contributor which results in a great clicks to your LinkedIn profile!<\/p>\n Whether in a LinkedIn group or when making a new connection, it can\u2019t always be all about you.<\/p>\n I know.<\/p>\n We\u2019re humans.<\/p>\n We\u2019re selfish.<\/em><\/p>\n But if you have the opportunity to help someone with the knowledge you possess or the connections you have, why wouldn\u2019t you? Karma is real, and I\u2019m sure you\u2019d want others to do the same for you.<\/p>\n And I\u2019m not just talking about on your word processor\u2026<\/p>\n Spelling errors are forgivable, if somewhat annoying and laughable on Facebook, Twitter, and other social networks. But LinkedIn is a professional<\/em> network. Exercise extra caution with daily posts and when constructing your profile or changing any descriptions.<\/p>\n It happens to the best of us!<\/p>\n A connection warned me once when my tagline contained a misspelling. I was grateful to be notified right away, and much more careful in the future.<\/p>\n Your<\/em> welcome, eh?<\/p>\n Just one example of many.<\/p>\n Along the lines of being conscientious with your spelling and grammar, you must exercise caution in terms of \u201cnormal\u201d<\/em> social networking behavior.<\/p>\n While Facebook and Twitter are legitimate places for videos of cats or goofy emojis, using them on LinkedIn cheapens your personal brand.<\/p>\n Use your best judgment in conversations and posting!<\/p>\n Ever get this notification?<\/p>\n \u201cSo and so endorsed you for ___\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n I get those frequently.<\/p>\n Most of the time, it\u2019s awesome and represents another professional I know backing my expertise in some field I\u2019m passionate about.<\/p>\n In some cases, I ask myself\u2026 why?<\/p>\n Everyone gets silly endorsements, but it\u2019s your choice to display them on your profile. So get rid of or hide the ones that have absolutely nothing to do with your professional aspirations\u2026<\/p>\n \u2026or dig too deeply into your personal life.<\/em><\/p>\n Okay, this may be pushing it on the \u201cthings that make you look dumb\u201d<\/em> scale, but having zero recommendations certainly doesn\u2019t make you look good, either.<\/p>\n If I\u2019m an HR Manager \u2014 relax, I\u2019m not!<\/em> \u2014 and I\u2019m looking at two different candidates on LinkedIn\u2026 one with a complete profile and a few recommendations for related jobs, and a candidate with similar experience who doesn\u2019t take their profile as seriously, it\u2019s going to affect my judgment.<\/p>\n Sometimes it\u2019s the little things that can make or break getting a job. Asking for recommendations is a no-brainer.<\/p>\n One of my favorite recommendations is from Teddy of Protein Bar. I sent him a message with some easy talking points and he used his own experience and style to give me a very solid recommendation.<\/p>\n If your LinkedIn profile contains a short line for each position you\u2019ve had, no summary, and no additional experiences like volunteering and certifications\u2026 you\u2019re just hurting yourself.<\/p>\n A complete profile is rich with keywords \u2014\u00a0not unlike a blog post!<\/strong><\/p>\n And like a blog post, you want to optimize your profile so that it\u2019s easy for someone looking for a candidate to actually find you.
